Behaviour Planning

Managing challenging behaviors is a critical aspect of providing effective support for individuals with developmental disabilities. Challenging behaviors can include aggression, self-injury, non-compliance, repetitive actions, or disruptive conduct.  These behaviours often serve as a form of communication, expressing unmet needs, discomfort, or frustration.  EDSI contracts service providers who recognize that these behaviours are not solely intentional but arise due to various factors.

Individualization and Collaboration:

  • Each person’s Behaviour Support Plan is personalized.  Their behaviour professionals will consider your loved-one or client’s strengths, preferences, and goals.
  • Collaboration with the individual, family, caregivers, and professionals ensures a holistic approach.

Growth Goals:

  • EDSI aims to not just facilitate behaviour reduction but promotes overall behaviour growth.
  • Goals may include improved communication, emotional regulation, social skills, and independence.
  • We celebrate progress, no matter how small, reinforcing positive change.

Evidence-Based Strategies:

  • We invite qualified Behaviour Therapists/Consultants to work with EDSI who strive to create positive change, using various applied behaviour theories.  These professionals will meet with your loved-one or individual and provide a space for feedback and a personalized Behaviour Support Plan.  Interventions are based on evidence-backed practices to promote positive outcomes.  Some of the information they will gather for the personalized Behaviour Support Plan:
    • Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA): This assessment helps identify the function (purpose) of the behavior. Is it attention-seeking, sensory-related, escape-motivated, or a form of communication?
    • Positive Behavior Support (PBS): These professionals will support the individuals using PBS, that emphasizes proactive strategies to prevent challenging behaviors. It focuses on creating an environment that encourages positive behaviors.
    • Teaching Replacement Skills: Instead of merely suppressing unwanted behaviors, our staff, by implementing the approved Behaviour Support Plan, will aim teach alternative skills. For example, if hitting is a challenge, staff will strive to teach appropriate ways to express frustration.
    • Reinforcement: Staff will reinforce desirable behaviors using positive reinforcement (e.g., praise, rewards) to increase their occurrence.
    • Antecedent Strategies: These involve modifying the environment or situation to prevent triggers for challenging behaviors.
    • Crisis Management: In crisis situations, we prioritize safety while maintaining a respectful approach.

Managing challenging behaviors requires patience, consistency, and empathy. By understanding the underlying reasons and using evidence-based strategies, we create a supportive environment for growth.
